I’m setting up an online shop!
The last market I attended was a disaster (for me).
I set up a great booth, kept my prices high (or where I want them to be), and sold about $200.00 worth of product – not good enough for the amount of effort. But the traffic was not great and there were so many potters that I was one of many and most of the other potters had put out their “seconds” to clear out their studios at really reasonable prices.
I think it’s a mistake to sell at low prices- just to clear out goods- it gives the buying public the message that pottery is “cheap”. ‘Nuff said- I could go on, but I won’t… I’m just not going to play that game anymore.
So…I’ve decided to forgo further markets and do an online shop.
I know that this is going to be risky and I’ll have to build a clientele, but I think I’m ready to give it a try.
I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
Happy selling!
Marian
I hope that works for you Marian. I gave my Christmas tree hangers as gifts rather than sell them for the very low price other potters were selling theirs for at markets.
I hope it works too. I’d rather not sell my work than put a “cheap” price on it. Sounds like you feel the same- we potters need to stick together on this!
Hi Marian. Do not feel alone. I have also decided that I refuse to sell myself cheap. I am doing ceramics for a living so am going the same route as you. I have put up a Shopify site, have many Pinterest boards, a Facebook page, Twitter & am trying to get a blog going. This is the way of the future. Stick to your guns & set yourself apart. You will not sell at the beginning but slowly it will all come together. Your blog is one of the very first that I started to follow. I love your work. Please do me a favor do not have specials on your site. Differentiate yourself. Good Luck
